Try to use more lines that define the shape to add to your volume. I like your color choices, but without the correct application, the whole image will look flat.

I tried to better define the shape and the flow of the hair with a few lines and stronger shadows, but the result is not as good as i expected.

now it feels better, though probably I'll have to modify the eyes to focus more the attention on them.

Smiley yep its getting there... if you still want to work on it after so long.
I would suggest just doing more shapes than lines. Right now you have a lot of lines on your painting, but if you use larger shapes to define those "lines" it might look better.

Changed the color of the hair. This way the highlights blend better with the hair and more focus to the face, though I'll also have to edit the face highlights and soften they're edge.
Also, i think this picture needs a background.

:O i think the red hair worked better for the contrast, the skin color also supports that more. Right now if you just try to turn the picture into grayscale, you will notice it's all gray, there's not much contrast to it at its current stage.

nice pic. Looks quite good, Espescially the hair.

Few comments I guess.
a: Anatomy seems slightly off. It doesnt matter if its stylised, but some proportions are inconsistent. The hands for example.
b: shadow inconsistency. Since the main lightsource seems to be the moon,. the character should be siitin in the shade. The barrier should cast a linear shadow to the floor diagonally. If shadows are wrong, it makes the character look like  she's floating.

Since this seems early attempt the shades of the mountain and clouds dont really matter, but if its night  (moon) the clouds should be shadowed and it its day, the clouds should casts underside shadows.

but again the hair seems solid, make sure the balance of light and shadow works, maybe sharper contrast . Think about the overall scene in your head, how you think it should look in three 3d

Oh and there are some good articles on how to use colour online. just basic colour wheel theory. Primary secondary and tertiary colours and all that.

yes, the contrast and the sense of light source is better in the second one. However, the hills and the clouds are still very generic, you might want to look up reference for them. I recommend:  http://www.sxc.hu/

Sign up for a free account and you can start downloading all sorts of cool images here for stocks.

Make it a habit to collect references, it will only speed things up and aid you in your quest to level up in illustration.
