'Tis the plunge, people!

Starting to paint over the line art, sharpening edges, getting textures, and trying not to lose form and value as I proceed. So far, so good. Saving details and highlights for the back burner at the very end, which will come at its own leisurely pace.

Night scene is usually a tough thing to do, I would throw some moon lights around the riders if you want to keep the warriors hidden, then add some rim lights, darken the warriors... that would look sweet and mysterious.

An illustration does require the contrast to excite the viewer. Looking good, keep building!
gingashi @ Tuesday, August 17th 2010, 5:17 PM
yeah those are some good ideas May. Overall looking sweet. To me, it has a mural feel- like depicting the tale of these warriors in a grand temple or castle, abstracting space and positioning just a bit rather than full on realistic depiction- but I think that's cool.

If the spirit is to have fun- definitely keep that going!

With the underlying line art and body structure still intact on a separate layer, I figured out my colors and shapes. I printed out the composition in black-and-white, then drew out the clothing with pen as a preliminary study and then used that as a guide when I went into openCanvas.

This scene takes place at night. Since they're ambushed during the evening, I'm being very careful with my color choices/temperatures/values.

The high ground choice is great! I like the mood you are building up here- keep it up and keep having fun with it!

finally took a break.
Continue this pic.

Everyone of my illustration... like 80% of it is about resting somewhere because i always do illustration when i feel like resting. lol

Just extended the old composition and giving it a different feel. (will continue to work on rearranging some details)

I love the dappled light on the forest floor and the cute liddle squirrel. Jeremy looks like he's in a comfortable place.

the best part of these relaxing illustrations is that it's not just an out pour from ourselves to the page. Works like these, cycle the relaxation back to us- just looking at it I feel peaceful.

OK, I'm noticing something recently. It seems like now, when I draw for fun, the piece turns out better than when I used to slave away at it and nitpick it to death.

This was just a drawing for the night. For fun. Now, it's turned into its own full-blown illustration in rough sketch mode. Man, I'm grateful for life drawing in this case. And uh...I got horses? *grin* This scene is when Cian is keeping Aidan and himself away from the slavers after slaughtering a few of the ones encroaching upon the young lad. I never realized until now just how awesome the scene must be...Cian on high ground, evading the enemy. Whooo!

Looks great, looks like when you are more at ease, all those knowledge that you got pounded with starts to flow. Keep it up.
RinoaDestiny @ Friday, August 13th 2010, 10:04 PM

Yeah, it sure seems that way. From now on, I'll just draw for fun!

another monster I did on that monster sheet. this time I did it for fun because I thought was rather unique. Basically its a floating orb with 4 eyes symmetrically set on its surface which are constantly crying, And it attacks through the water formed by the tears. Think of it like an water elementalist / hydromancer for those of the old ways, or a water bender for those who only know "avatar the last airbender"

doing these i forgot how nice it was to draw in black and white, been doing things in color so much recently. so long that i forgot about it. Might do a few drawings in the old black and white for fun...hmmm...
mayshing @ Monday, July 19th 2010, 8:06 PM

amazing update Yann, looking at the cool stuff you are doing is very inspiring. GAHHHH I want to draw. X3

I have sometime to sketch now finally, on breaks from my volunteer work but not really. I don't have internet and all my books with me in Shanghai China... so it's a bit harder to use references. T_T *cries*

I want to do some amazing concept art like you are working on too.

I don't like doing painting in black and white then color... *though I know the proceedure* but it's such a useful tool. X3 Especially if you are working for a client.

Aye, thanks.
jeez, sounds tough where you are. Hope you're enjoying it tho, otherwise that would really be bad.
The procedure i was following was part of the assignment, they asked it to follow this format which was "new" to me, so to speak (seen it before but never actually did it.) which was interesting and pleasing to my eye.

regardless, i hope you can get back to drawing things for yourself again, would be a shame if you didn't, considering you do such nice work .
mayshing @ Thursday, July 29th 2010, 11:38 PM

I need to get used to the gray to color process too. It can be really useful. But I have the split opinions when it comes to gray in painting, using only value scale first can bother me. (not with drawing which is strange) But I should over come that.

Right now I am almost done in Shanghai and I will be home soon looking for jobs. X3 Bank account about empty I need to job hunt quickly. *waaaaahhhh

We did help a lot of people to deal with their emotional issues and life difficulties, I feel good about that, but I feel I completely neglected art practices in this 1 month. T_T Originally I planned to draw on my laptop, but with my laptop lagging so much and my family need to share it, I stopped drawing on it. OTL I shall catch back and level up quickly when I get back home. :3

yann- your new stuff is looking amazing as ever. It's always such a treat to see your latest stuff, thanks for sharing!

YAy!,3 days hard work never felt so good. Here is my first foray into trying to get a job as a concept artist. Was asked to do some "homework" samples as a preliminary step for further consideration. because the company is set in Cambridge England, I had to draw and complete this understanding that the people that I was working for lived 5 hour's later then I did.
If I'm accepted for the job, it means I'll need to move to England... which is a daunting prospect.

i really like the shark one at the top the most, if i go back to them, i'm probably going to do a color up for that one as well. Don't know why, just love the way he looks.
